What is an Anagram?

A word formed by rearranging all the letters of another word

An Anagram is a word or phrase formed by rearranging all the letters of another word, using each letter exactly once. The term comes from the Greek anagrammatismos, meaning "transposition of letters."

Anagrams have been used for centuries in literature, puzzles, and word games. Famous examples include J.K. Rowling's "Tom Marvolo Riddle" which rearranges to "I Am Lord Voldemort."

Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about anagrams and our solver

What is an anagram?

An anagram is a word formed by rearranging letters of another word, using all letters exactly once. For example, "LISTEN" becomes "SILENT" - both use the same six letters arranged differently.

How do I use the anagram solver?

Enter your letters (up to 15 total, including wildcards) in the search box, apply optional filters like starting letter or word length, select your dictionary, and click Solve. Results appear instantly, sorted by points.

What's the difference between anagram and unscramble?

An anagram uses ALL letters exactly once (LISTEN → SILENT). Unscrambling finds words using SOME or ALL letters, ideal for Scrabble where you don't use every tile. Our tool does both!

How do I use wildcard or blank tiles?

Enter a question mark (?) for each blank tile. For example, "CAT?" finds all words with C, A, T plus any letter. You can use up to 3 wildcards - the solver tries A-Z for each.

Which dictionaries are supported?

This solver supports OTCWL/TWL (Scrabble US/Canada), SOWPODS (Scrabble UK), and Words With Friends. For Wordle, Quordle, and Octordle, use those dedicated solvers under Word Tools.

Is the anagram solver free?

Yes! AnagramSolver.io is 100% free with no limits, no registration, and no hidden fees. Use it unlimited times for Scrabble, WWF, Wordle, crosswords, or any word game.

How are word points calculated?

Points use standard letter values for each game. Scrabble scores Q=10, Z=10, X=8, while WWF differs slightly. We auto-apply correct scoring based on your selected dictionary.

Does it work on mobile devices?

Absolutely! Our Anagram Solver is fully responsive and works great on phones, tablets, and desktops. The interface adapts to your screen, perfect for solving during game play.
